8th GRADE CELP CAMP OVERNIGHT FIELD TRIP

Monday, March 22 - Wednesday, March 24, 2027 (during spring break)

Calling all 8th graders! We have a special trip for you to celebrate your last year at Reed. Let's go to CELP (Catalina Environmental Leadership Program) Camp — March 22-24, 2027!

 

CELP is located at Howlands Landing on Santa Catalina Island—a secluded cove including hundreds of feet of beach and a private pier. Among the activities offered are:

  • Snorkeling
  • Hiking
  • Kayaking
  • Tide-pooling
  • Night kayaking and star gazing
  • Outdoor art class
  • Team building
  • Wall climbing, high ropes course
  • And just hanging out at the beach and campfires!

Founded in 1999, CELP was the first Ambassadors of the Environment (AOTE) program, a network of global environmental education programs started by Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society.

 

CELP staff: The camp is supervised by and activities are led by CELP staff who are all lifeguards with First Aid, CPR, AED (defibrillator), and Emergency Oxygen certifications. Chaperones: At least 4 parent chaperones also will supervise the campers and attend the activities.

 

THIS IS A NON-SPONSORED FIELD TRIP, MEANING THAT THIS IS PARENT-LED WITH THE SUPPORT OF FRIENDS OF REED. LAUSD AND WALTER REED ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE PARTIES. 

PRICE

$520, which includes 2 nights/3 days at CELP, transportation to/from, meals, and activities. Pay all at once or 3 installments. Scholarships: Scholarships are limited, the final number is still being decided. Please indicate your interest in a scholarship here. If you indicate your interest, you do not need to make the payment to hold your spot at this moment. We will get back to you as soon as possible!

 

NUMBER OF CAMPERS

Spaces are limited, so this will be on a first pay, first serve basis. 

 

TRANSPORTATION DETAILS

On Monday, March 22 (first day of spring break), the bus will leave Reed at tentatively 8:00 am, arriving at San Pedro Catalina Express terminal with the campers boarding the boat to head to Catalina at 10:00 am. They'll arrive at CELP at 11:15 am.

 

Campers return Wednesday, March 24. Their boat from CELP will reach the San Pedro terminal at 2:00 pm where they'll board the bus and arrive at Walter Reed around 4:00pm. (Confirmed schedules will be sent out closer to departure date.)

 

ACCOMODATIONS

Campers live in group cabins of up to 12 campers. Each cabin has its own shower and restroom facility, overhead light, and electrical outlets. While parent chaperones will stay in a chaperone-only cabin, they are responsible for supervising each of the campers' cabins.

 

DINING & NUTRITION 

Three buffet style meals each full day. On Monday, lunch and dinner. On Wednesday, breakfast and lunch. CELP boasts that feedback indicates their kitchen staff "delivers a meal far above typical camp fare." In their words: 

Fresh fruit and cereal accompany breakfast, while lunch and dinner menus include a full salad bar. Meat and vegetarian meals are available. Dinner includes a dessert. As cost and availability allow, we are incorporating many organic food selections into our menu.

 

We are happy to make accommodations for those with food allergies and other dietary needs. 

SAFETY

Registered nurses are on-site daily to care for the daily needs of campers, and they are fully prepared for any emergency. Gate access requires a code or office approval to enter. 

 

CELP staff members are lifeguards with First Aid, CPR, AED, and Emergency Oxygen certifications

trained to handle emergencies during CELP-managed activities.

 

Twenty-four hour emergency medical care is available in the city of Avalon and by LA County

Baywatch paramedics located in the nearby port of Two Harbors.

 

ACTIVITIES

CELP offers a very full program of outdoor and aquatic activities, team building, studying the coastline and aquatic life, and creative adventures.
